The funeral service was as nice as those kinds of services could be. The pastor, who seemed to know Adam well, spoke highly of him. He told us all that we should admire a man who did his best to live a whole life, even in the wake of such a tragic loss. He reminded us all that we had but one life to live, and that we should do our best to serve those around us, and to love them. He parted with a prayer that made me finally feel peace for the first time all day.

I said goodbye to Mitch, who promised he’d have me over for dinner one night so I could finally meet his wife and kids, and drove Abe back to his apartment above the shop.

“You doing okay?” I asked him as we came up the hill where the antique shop rested. The valley spilled along the foot of the mountains behind us, and the afternoon sun made all the trees that still clung to their leaves look like spun gold.

“I’m alright,” Abe said, and I noticed there wasn’t as much heaviness to his voice as there had been earlier. That gave me some comfort.

We pulled into the parking lot and got out of the car. I helped Abe through the doors and back upstairs to his apartment.

Abe settled down in his chair. I made us some hot tea and brought it to him. As he sipped, he looked up at me thoughtfully. “One good thing came from today; Benton showed up. And I think that I helped him feel okay about everything. Adam always wanted to make amends with him, just as much as Benton did. Even though they never said the words, they both meant it. I hope he can forgive himself…”

I laid a hand on Abe’s arm. “You’re a good man, Mr. Cromwell.”

Abe smiled tightly, but there was a softness in his gaze. “Thank you for coming with me today,” he said. “You really are like family to me, Marianne. I was glad to have your company.”

I smiled at him, and leaned down to give him a big hug. “You’re my family, too,” I said to him.

He gave me a few affectionate pats on the arm, but I pulled away and walked back over to the tea kettle, which was whistling again, so he didn’t see my misty eyes.

I decided to stay for a late lunch, and eventually, he insisted that I head home so I could rest. “You’ve done enough for me today. More than enough. But let me take care of you, too.”

“I just don’t want you to be alone on a day like today,” I said.

He smiled at me. “Truly, I’m okay. I have more peace about the whole thing. Of course I don’t like that my number of friends seems to grow shorter with each passing day, but I do think that he’s at peace now. And more than that, he’s with Betty…and to be honest, that’s all he ever wanted, I think.
